JOHANNESBURG – Margaret Arnolds, an African Independent Congress councilor, has been chosen as Johannesburg council speaker.

Arnolds was nominated by the African National Congress- Economic Freedom Fighters, which controls the council majority.

Floyd Brink, the city manager, made the announcement not long ago.

“According to schedule item five, if only one candidate is nominated, the person presiding must declare that candidate duly elected.” As a result, I pronounce Margaret Sharon Arnolds to be the legitimately elected speaker of the council for the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.”

Colleen Makhubele, who had previously held the role, was sacked from her party, Congress of the People, last week.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) voted to skip Monday’s session, calling it a waste of money.

“The DA will not be complicit in such a waste of money and will, therefore, not be attending the meeting,” said DA caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku. Our attitude remains unchanged: the Johannesburg council must be addressed, and we will not grant legitimacy to the apocalyptic coalition while they waste taxpayers’ money.”
