President Cyril Ramaphosa, under pressure from his own party, appears to be moving quickly to resolve Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s power struggle.

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – The African National Congress (ANC) claims Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s bid for more powers over Eskom is complete.

This comes after top ANC officials deliberated on the subject after Ramokgopa addressed it at the ANC’s National Working Committee (NWC) last week.

Ramokgopa is in charge of putting an end to load shedding, but he appears to be at war with the electrical provider’s board about when the continuous power outages will end.

ANC national spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri said that President Cyril Ramaphosa has reaffirmed his commitment to dealing with the matter.

President Ramaphosa, having been placed under pressure by his own party, is apparently moving with haste to resolve Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s powers dilemma.

Bhengu-Motsiri said that the president gave the NWC an update on the Eskom matter.

“[The] president just returned to report that this is a done deal.” We’re just working on regulatory issues, proclamation issues, and ensuring sure state institutions aren’t destabilized by unclear duties.”

Ramokgopa is now serving in two capacities: as power minister and as acting finance minister.

This comes as Enoch Godongwana prepares to travel to Berlin for the G20-Africa meeting next week.
