South African music star Tyla had great success at the MTV VMAs 2024. She won against big names like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Tems, Ayra Starr, and Lojay, who were all in the same category.
The artist won the award for Best Afrobeat Song for her popular song “Water. ”
She said the win felt mixed because all African music is labeled as Afrobeats.
“This is really special, but also a bit sad because people often put all artists together under Afrobeats,” said the star, whose music is more similar to Amapiano.
“Afrobeats has helped us in many ways, but there are many different styles of African music. ” “It’s not just Afrobeats. ”
